For a small nonprofit, the fastest path to real cash usually runs through a big retailer’s local giving program. The decision is made close to home, the application is short, and the amounts — while modest — actually land.

Walmart Spark Good is the anchor — and it’s open

Walmart Spark Good Local Grants give $250–$5,000 from each store, Sam’s Club, and distribution center. The third cycle of the year runs August 1 to November 30 — the back-to-school-through-fall window. One thing that trips people up: you must create a Spark Good account and get verified through Deed (Walmart’s verifier), and that takes time — start it in July so you’re ready when the cycle opens. If funded, set up electronic payment within 21 days or the grant is withdrawn.

The rest of the field

• Dollar General Literacy funds literacy work — its 2026 rounds are closed, with the Adult, Family, and Summer programs reopening in January 2027. Bookmark it.
• Lowe’s Community Impact Grants are nomination-based for shared community spaces; 2026 nominations have closed (they reported a $10,000–$100,000 range and up to 100 projects — confirm on their terms before planning).
• Target gives store gift cards — small ($25–$50 average, $500/year cap) but easy, via an in-store form.

Two to know about but not count on

State Farm’s company grants are invitation-only — real, but poor odds for a cold applicant; know it exists through an agent relationship rather than building a plan on it. Its Neighborhood Assist program awards crowd-voted $25,000 grants, but the submission window is short and fills in days — treat it as a long shot you move fast on.
